The Missouri State Board of Education has approved the St. Louis Language Immersion School (SLLIS) charter for another five years.

The State Board held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 9th, 2024. The meeting was held virtually this month due to inclement weather across the state. One of the agenda items for the meeting included the renewal of the charter for the St. Louis Language Immersion School (SLLIS). Representing SLLIS at the virtual meeting were Executive Director of the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL) Charter School Office, Dr. Susan Marino, and SLLIS Superintendent Dr. Meghan Hill.

During the meeting, the Missouri State Board of Education members reviewed detailed information about SLLIS’ performance over the past five years as well as SLLIS’ proposed Performance Contract with UMSL for the coming charter term. Then, the Board voted to renew SLLIS’ charter for five more years.

The slides that SLLIS prepared and submitted to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education can be viewed here (https://5il.co/2c1g2). These slides highlight SLLIS’ exceptional student growth measures over the years of the charter term, including the following noteworthy details regarding SLLIS’ 2023 MAP performance:

  • 2023 English Language Arts Growth

    • SLLIS’ overall student growth in ELA is #1 in Missouri.

    • For the Student Group (which includes Black students, Hispanic students, students with IEPs, students who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch, and students who are English Language Learners), SLLIS’ growth in ELA is tied for #2 in Missouri.

  • 2023 Math Growth

    • SLLIS’ overall student growth in Math is in the top 6% in Missouri.

    • For the Student Group (see definition above), SLLIS’ growth in Math is #15 in Missouri.

Charter schools in Missouri are tuition-free, public schools authorized and held accountable by a sponsor. SLLIS opened its doors in 2009 and has now completed three charter renewals with its sponsor, UMSL.

The St. Louis Language Immersion School Board and leadership team look forward to continuing to serve the families of St. Louis City. SLLIS provides bilingual, culturally responsive, transformational education for its students and continues to offer an exceptional and unique educational opportunity for the St. Louis community.
